Keynote Talks

Keynote Talk A (Apr. 24th)

Speaker
Dr. Vipin Kumar
Title
Big Data in Climate: Opportunities and Challenges for Machine Learning (slides pptx, pdf)
Abstract
The climate and earth sciences have recently undergone a rapid transformation from a data-poor to a data-rich environment. In particular, massive amount of data about Earth and its environment is now continuously being generated by a large number of Earth observing satellites as well as physics-based earth system models running on large-scale computational platforms. These massive and information-rich datasets offer huge potential for understanding how the Earth’s climate and ecosystem have been changing and how they are being impacted by humans actions. This talk will discuss various challenges involved in analyzing these massive data sets as well as opportunities they present for both advancing machine learning as well as the science of climate change.

Title
The Puzzle of Japanese Innovation and Entrepreneurship (slides)
Abstract
Japan has great capabilities in technological innovation. We can see this in the large number of patents that Japanese companies and universities produce. However, Japan seems to lag behind many other countries in the creation of new companies or even new businesses within existing companies. This talk focuses on explaining this puzzle, relying on data and frameworks from an initiative started at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology called MIT REAP (Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program). This talk will also explain briefly efforts a team in Tokyo is making to address the weaknesses in Japan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
